100 years of record breaking Bluebirds

Theatres and cars don’t usually go together, but 100 years ago the Bluebird legend was born when Sir Malcolm Campbell saw Maurice Maeterlinck’s play The Blue Bird at the Theatre Royal Haymarket. So inspired by the play he rushed home to christen his racing car Blue Bird having purchased his local iron monger’s entire stock of blue paint.

A century on, and for the first time, the record-breaking Bluebird cars and boats will come together outside the Theatre Royal Haymarket, which will also see the unveiling of the Bluebird team’s latest vehicle: the Bluebird Formula E Racing Car.

The spectacle will take place outside the theatre from 8am-10.30pm. At 2pm Sir Malcolm’s grandchildren Don Wales and Gina Campbell will speak about their family’s 100 years of record breaking. This will be an opportunity for petrolheads to see some of Britain’s greatest record-breaking vehicles.
