A real mixed bag at the multiplex this weekend. Robert Pattinson returns to the screen in Bel Ami in an adaptation of the 19th century by Guy de Maupassant. In our print edition, the film received a middling review:
Declan Donnellan and Nick Ormerod’s handsomely crafted period piece has heaving bosoms and straining breeches aplenty but Pattinson lacks sexual chemistry with any of his co-stars, making a mockery of his anti-hero’s ability to reduce lovers to swooning, gibbering wrecks. His bed-hopping liaisons are not remotely dangerous.
John Carter 3D finally arrives in a blaze of high tech wizardry and it’s always good to see John Cusack back on the screen, this time in The Raven. On the art house scene, Scout is particularly excited by A Man’s Story, a documentary on designer Ozwald Boateng and the well-reviewed Trishna by Michael Winterbottom.
