The popularity of table tennis in London shows no sign of abating, and now our favourite proponents of the ping-pong social - Pongathon - are going corporate.
On every other Tuesday between 6 March and 15 May, the first ever Pongathon City Challenge Series aims to find the best table tennis team from the capital’s companies.
Each company can register up to four two-player teams for the group stages, which will take place between 19.00-21.00 on match days.
There’s not much time to pick your team though. Thursday 1 March is the deadline for all entries. A place in the competition costs £50 per team, £10 of which will go to a charity to be decided by the winners.
The knockout stage will see teams randomly selected to play in a round robin, with fair play and ping-pong etiquette overseen by one of Pongathon’s supreme masters.
Each match will be a best of three games. The top two teams from each group will gain a coveted place in the finals on 15 May, and a chance at immortality.
Aside from eternal glory, the admiring smiles and batting of eyes from those in the crowd, the victors will become the proud owners of a Pro Table Tennis Table as used by the Chinese National Team.
The champions will also be able to name the charity of their choice to receive a donation made from every team’s entry fees.
Spectators are very welcome, and entry is free. Team uniforms, cheeky banter and general all-round whoopin’ and hollerin’ are positively encouraged. Prizes will be awarded for those making an extra effort.
The Pongathon City Challenge Series will take place at Richmix in Shoreditch with the usual guarantee of drinks, music, art and design from the areas creative locals.
